Most men expect thinning hair as they age, but that doesn’t mean they’re happy when it starts happening! If you’re a man struggling with thinning hair – or you want to prevent thinning hair – here are seven things you can do to make your hair look its best.
1. Only wash your hair every 2 to 3 days
Overwashing hair can cause loose hair to fall out and can strip hair of the oils and sebum it needs to stay on your scalp. Overwashing can also dry out your hair which can cause hair loss and thinning to occur prematurely. Hair falling out at 20 is not uncommon. But we suggest you to wash your hair as less as possible to help your natural oils protect your scalp to prevent hair loss
2. Keep your hair short
Long hair tends to show flaws much more than short, cropped hair. To avoid the obvious look of thinning hair, keep your hair short. Most men with thinning hair look good with crop cuts or slightly longer hair. It depends on the color and texture of your hair, so ask your stylist which barber cuts look best for you.
3. Use high-quality products
Shampoos, conditioners, gels and other styling products are a dime a dozen. But most products available at the drugstore aren’t high quality. If you want to save the hair you have, it’s important to choose high-quality products for thinning hair to avoid young baldness. This way, there won’t be chemical residue agitating your scalp or damaging your thin hair.
4. Avoid over-styling your hair
While you may have purchased some high-quality products to style your hair, playing with it too much can weaken your already-thin hair. When you do need to style your hair, make sure to be gentle and avoid too much heat or too much product. Most gels and styling agents require very little to hold. On days where you don’t need to style your hair, don’t!
5. Retire your hat collection
There’s no denying that hats do a great job of hiding thinning hair, but they don’t help your scalp or hair either. If you’re serious about making your hair last, stop using hats. They cut off airflow to your scalp which is important to regenerate follicle growth and stimulate blood flow. Plus, the pressure and/or friction from the seams can rub your thin hair right out!
6. Talk to your doctor
If you’re really worried about your thinning hair or the rate at which you’re losing hair, talk to your primary care doctor. He or she may refer you to a hormone specialist, nutritionist or another professional who may be able to slow the progression of thinning hair.
7. Chill out
Unfortunately, worrying about your hair won’t help it stick around. Thinning hair is a natural process for most men as they age, but increased cortisol from stress can actually make it worse. Relax and treat your hair as gently as you can; you may notice that you lose less hair or that your hair isn’t thinning as much.
