Does CBD promote Hair Growth?

I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about CBD. CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-addictive, non-euphoric chemical found in the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as cannabis or hemp. Because our bodies have CBD receptors all around (in the brain, organs, skin, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells), CBD can help treat many health conditions. But what about CBD and hair loss? Can CBD promote hair growth?

The benefits of CBD on Hair

CBD is commonly used to help treat anxiety and neurological disorders, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. Because it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, our hair can also benefit from it. How?

CBD can help soothe the scalp, regulate oil production, and help with hair issues caused by inflammation. “The actual active (cannabinoid) is anti-inflammatory and can help psoriasis and dermatitis,” Michelle Henry, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, Harvard-trained surgeon states.

CBD and Hair Regrowth

Recent studies indicate that CBD-enriched topical treatments can help regrow hair. But how? Well, because reducing inflammation is equal to encouraging hair growth.

The 2021 study went like this: Scientists chose a group of women and men with thinning hair. A hair count was done for each participant before they were sent back home with a box of CBD oil.

During the next six months, these men and women applied CBD oil to their scalp and hair. After the six month study ended, a new hair count was done. The results were shocking.

After applying CBD oil, these women and men showed a total average of 93.5% increased hair growth. Talk about magical nature!

Why was it so successful? Scientists believe that when our hair comes into contact with CBD particles, the CBD receptors in our hair follicles are nourished, which helps prolong the growth phase (anagen) of the hair cycle.

CBD may also help with better sleep and reduced anxiety. And, because stress is a common cause of excessive hair loss, a decrease in daily stressors and better quality of sleep may positively affect the regrowth of hair follicles.

CBD or Hemp Seed Oil?

You might have heard of Hemp seed oil as well and thought it was the same as CBD. But these are not the same. Hemp seed oil is derived from seeds, so it doesn’t carry as many anti-inflammatory benefits as CBD oil. However, if you’re looking to add some moisturize to an irritated scalp, then Hemp seed oil is your way to go.

Hemp as hydrator. CBD as anti-inflammation.

How to use CBD for your Hair

It’s fair to note that other forms of CBD (like gummies, capsules or vapes) have not been proved yet to have the same benefits of CBD oil.

Now, if you opt for a CBD-infused shampoo or conditioner do know that because it’s diluted, it will not have the same effect as pure oil. You will still get the benefits from it but at a lower degree. Our advice is to use it as often as your hair type calls for.

If you prefer to try CBD oil directly on the scalp, you’ll get much faster results. We advise you to use six to eight drops, as often as recommended for your hair type.

Our Takeaway

It is a fact that CBD oil benefits hair. And to the question of could CBD promote hair growth? The answer is yes. But, again, not all CBD products are the same.

If you are considering using CBD oil as part of your hair care routine, make sure you do some research about the product you choose. CBD will not harm you or your hair. But there’s so many options to pick from that you want to be sure you pick the right one for your hair type!
