August: The Hair Loss Awareness Month

Did you know that August is the Hair Loss Awareness Month? The American Academy of Dermatology has designated August as so. We could say that Alopecia is due to some sort of evolution and humans will eventually lose their hair and be forever bald. We all hope this won’t happen.

The truth is that Alopecia is more common than you think and about 147 million people around the world suffer from it, including women and children. Hair loss may affect you whether you are old, young, male or female.

Today, since we are starting Hair Loss Awareness Month, we are going to show you some facts that maybe you didn’t know as well as some ways to be aware but not to suffer about it.

Statistics

– About 35 million men and 21 million women in the US suffer from hair loss.

– On average, the human scalp has anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles.

– It’s common to lose roughly 100 hairs per day.

– More than 310,000 hair restoration procedures take place worldwide during a year.

– About 30% of the people that gets surgical hair restoration are between 30 and 39 years old.

– There are people that need 2 or more surgical procedures to get the results they want.

Types of hair loss

·Androgenetic alopecia: Also called pattern alopecia is the most common form of hair loss and affects both men and women. It is a genetically determined disorder and the symptoms change according to the gender.

·Male pattern baldness is characterized by loss of hair on the top and front of the head. Female pattern baldness is characterized by loss of hair on the top and crown of the head. This hair loss in women usually starts in the central part without affecting the frontal line.

·Traction alopecia: It is a hair loss produced by constantly pulling your hair, maybe when you ware the same hairstyle daily or if you use weaves or dreadlocks. This is the type of alopecia that you can avoid by taking care of your hair and protecting it from damage.

·Alopecia areata: It appears when the immune system attacks the hair follicles, it can also affect elsewhere on the body. Some studies reveal that it can be generated by stressful situations but doctors are not sure about the causes. There is still not a known cure for this complication.

Hair Loss Solutions are Available for You

Losing your hair can lead to emotional struggle no matter if you are a man or a woman, but don’t worry… there is still hope! Based on your particular situation, you have several options to solve hair loss issues: surgery, laser, topic treatments, hormones and hair building fibers.

You can use one option or combine different things. We have seen cases of people recovering up to 80%-90% of their hair back with surgery and fixing that little extra white space with hair fibers. Hair Loss Awareness month is not a month to congratulate baldies, but mostly to inform those who don’t know too much about the options available and really feel bad about their situation on how to turn their struggle into great results. Pass it on.
